Celebrating 50 Years of Live Theater at the Chautauqua Playhouse

The Chautauqua Playhouse

A Legacy of Creativity and Community

This year, the Chautauqua Playhouse is celebrating an incredible milestone—50 years of bringing the magic of live theater to Carmichael and beyond! Since its founding in 1975, the Chautauqua Playhouse has been a cornerstone of Sacramento’s performing arts scene, delighting audiences with everything from comedies and dramas to musicals and children’s theater.

It all started when Rodger Hoopman founded the Chautauqua Players and staged their first production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1975. The success of that show led to the opening of the Chautauqua Playhouse in Sacramento in 1976. After nearly a decade of expansion, the Playhouse moved to its current location in Carmichael in 1985, where it continues to shine as a hub for creativity, learning, and community connection.
